Digital Lifestyles Nominated For the Chamber of Commerce Small Business Social Entrepreneurship Award
CALGARY, ALBERTA–(June 15, 2018) – Digital Lifestyles recognition as a nominee for the Chamber of Commerce Social Entrepreneurship Award, positions them in the top 1% of businesses in Calgary.
This award is presented to the Calgary small business that has been a leader in finding ways of doing business while positively impacting the community and demonstrating concern for the environment. Finalists will be announced at the end of August and awards will be presented at Small Business Week Calgary, October 15-19, 2018.
Digital Lifestyles is a smart technology and integrated systems provider, deeply rooted in purpose and passion. Their social entrepreneur investment strategy is 3 fold; they give back to the community on an individual basis, donating custom home automation packages for disabled community members; on larger scale projects in partnership with organizations; and by fundraising, hosting substantial philanthropic events to raise money for local charities.
Mike Dummer, President and Founder of Digital Lifestyles explains, “Our motivation for giving back is not based on receiving accolades or awards but we are extremely honoured to be recognized for our contributions and hope this will demonstrate to others how they too can use their expertise to give back to those in need.” Mike further states, “We have never let finances be a road block to helping and we frequently donate our time, resources and automation systems where we can; eventually we would like to see subsidized programs so this type of infrastructure can be the norm for those living with disabilities.” One of the most recent projects they completed was for 24 year old Ryan Kostiuk, a paraplegic living with cerebral palsy. Digital Lifestyles created a home automation system specifically adapted for Ryan; all applications run through Wi-Fi and a proprietary app that controls the program. He operates it through his mobile phone allowing him to open, close and lock doors, control lights and media. What he previously relied on caregivers to perform, he can now execute independently.
Digital Lifestyles most recent large scale project was Accessible Housing’s Inclusio Project; this is Calgary’s first fully automated assisted living apartment. They built the complete infrastructure that allows each resident to overcome obstacles using a simple interface on their phone or tablet, to control their environment. This includes light switches, fans, blinds, thermostats, security systems, entertainment packages (TV, movies, and music) and motorized door openers. Other sizable projects Digital Lifestyles has partnered on include, providing the automation infrastructure for the Fanning Centre and University of Calgary’s Faculty of Design Studies Laneway Home Project for the elderly.
In February, Digital Lifestyles hosted their 7th annual Rockability Concert Series fundraiser at the Deerfoot Inn Chrome Showroom. Legendary Phil X and the Drills (lead guitarist for Bon Jovi) performed for their attendees in support of Easter Seals of Alberta and Accessible Housing. Their silent auction and large format raffle is the centerpiece for this fundraiser, with all proceeds going directly to families facing an urgent medical need, a life-long disability, a devastating accident or those with physical challenges seeking to improve their quality of life.
Digital Lifestyles’ business practices also demonstrate environmental stewardship. Initiatives include repairing and re-purposing equipment that is then donated to the Women’s Shelter, Boys and Girls Club and Easter Seals. As well, their mandate is to provide clients with the very best energy efficient solutions for their homes. In addition, they collaborate with home builders to reduce construction waste by building long lasting homes that are sustainable and support accessibility and aging in place infrastructure. In their own office environment they have deployed new technology to reduce needless road trips, instead troubleshooting and servicing clients remotely.
